Actions definition

Actions provide a way for the Axeda® Platform to perform operations directly on related assets or on their information in the Platform. Using the Action wizard you can configure actions that

o        perform operations on an asset (and its configuration and properties)

o        update the Platform records

o        update assets from Asset dashboards (Axeda® Service application)

o        perform software management functions on assets or on the Platform including file transfers and package deployment)

Notes:

The Set Data Item, Alarm, and Request Data Item actions (Asset Update actions) are specific to a model; all other Asset Update actions can be defined for any model in the Platform.

The Data Entry and Collect Data actions (Enterprise UI actions) are also specific to a model. They can be executed manually from the Asset dashboards of the Axeda® Service application (Actions list). These two actions cannot be associated with business rules.

When viewing actions in a Platform with Delegated Administration enabled, the names of actions may have prefixes; for details, refer to Names of Objects in DA Units.

Also note that Delegated Admin visibility restrictions and privileges are NOT fully supported for Actions. See Supported Objects for Delegated Administration for more information.

Most actions are executed based on some trigger. You can configure an action for execution in the following ways:

o        Configure actions to run based on rules
You assign actions to rules. Whenever the condition of the associated rule evaluates to true, the Platform executes the actions assigned to that rule.

o        "Create" actions to run on next contact
From the Axeda® Service application, Asset dashboard Actions module or the Actions page, you can select to run Asset Update actions that are configured in the Configuration application. When an asset next contacts the Platform, the selected action(s) are executed on that asset. The advantage here is that you do not need to wait for any trigger conditions to be true. (Although you can run the Enterprise UI actions from Asset dashboards, the option to run on next contact does not apply to them.)

o        Configure actions to run based on a schedule
From the Usage application, Rule wizard for schedules, you can you can select actions already configured in the Configuration application to run based on a schedule. Actions can run based on absolute schedules (for example, specific time and day), or interval schedules (for example, every week or every 15 minutes or every day at 4pm).

Privileges for modifying action properties are assigned to user groups. You assign user groups to an action when you create the specific action. You can create actions from the Create an action page.

For information about security for Actions (referred to as "old style"), refer to Security for Objects in Axeda® Connected Product Management Applications and for information about security for these objects when Delegated Administration is enabled, refer to Security for Objects in Delegated Administration Units.

In a Platform with Delegated Administration enabled, the names of actions may be displayed with prefixes. For details, refer to Names of Objects in DA Units.
