Action wizard - Configure request data item action

Request Data Item actions (Category: Asset update actions) enable a user of the Axeda® Connected Product Management Applications to request the Axeda® Platform to retrieve values for data items defined in the target assets. When a rule associated with this action type evaluates to true, the value for the data item defined in this action is retrieved from the related asset.

Note: This action applies to all assets of the model(s) selected in the Models for action page. You can use this action for assets running Axeda® IDM and Axeda Wireless Protocol (AWP) agents. You CANNOT use it for assets running Axeda® Gateway, Axeda® Connector, or Axeda® Agent Embedded. While the Platform shows that this action is available for models running any agent, keep in mind that you need to know what agent is running on the assets of a model so that you do not try to use this action for assets running agents that do not support it. The only place you can see that the Request Data Item action is not supported by an asset is in the drm.log file.

BEST PRACTICE: Make sure that all assets of a model are running homogenous agents. For example, all assets of a model may be running Axeda Connector and/or Axeda Gateway, or all assets of a model are running Axeda IDM agents. That way, when selecting models for actions, users are less likely to create or run an action for an asset whose agent does not support it.

To configure Request Data Item actions

1.       Select the name of the data item for which you want the Platform to retrieve a value. If you do not see the data item in the Data Item list, you may first need to create it in the Model wizard pages.

Note: Any data items configured as Not Visible or Not Stored in the Model wizard, data items page do not appear in the list of data items.

2.       When you are finished, click Next to select the user groups with edit permission for this action. If you click Finish, the action confirmation page appears. If you click Cancel and continue canceling, all information configured in this wizard is removed.

Tips

o        In the Axeda® Service application, Asset dashboard Actions module and Tasks module, you can view the actions configured for the selected asset.

o        The Service application, Asset dashboard Audit Log, shows a log of activity for the selected asset, including registration, actions run, alarms acknowledged, statuses, usage value setting, and more. Also, if you have privileges to the Administration application, you can search the Audit log for asset, Platform, and user activity.

o        When you run the Request Data Item action from an Asset dashboard for an asset whose agent supports the action, you will see an audit log message (Audit Log module) about the requested action. However you will not see the data item in the Current Data Items page after running the action.

o        Axeda Gateway, Axeda Connector, and Axeda Agent Embedded do not support this action. Should someone attempt to run this action for an asset that is running one of these agents, no messages will appear in the Agent console about the requested action. The only warning message appears in the drm.log file for the Platform. No messages will appear in the Asset dashboard that the action failed.
