Model definition

A single model contains many assets of the same type and properties. For example, ModelXYZ may contain 50 identical connected, intelligent assets, all installed at different locations but intended for the same functionality. There can be numerous assets of different model types connected to a single Gateway asset.

All assets in a model share the same set of data items and the same set of asset properties. You are limited to viewing only models for which you have privileges.

NOTE: Delegated Admin visibility restrictions and privileges are NOT fully supported for Models. See Supported Objects for Delegated Administration for more information.

BEST PRACTICE: Ensure that all assets of a model are running homogenous agents. For example, all assets of a model may be running Axeda Connector and/or Axeda Gateway, or all assets of a model are running Axeda IDM agents. That way, when selecting models for actions, users are less likely to create or run an action for assets whose agents do not support it.

When configuring models for use in the Axeda® Platform, you can

o        assign numbers to identify models

o        configure manufacturers for models

o        configure asset groups for models

o        configure the type of model: as gateways (assets running Axeda® Gateway); as managed by an Axeda Gateway (assets configured to be managed from a gateway asset); or as standalone assets with no gateway involved (assets running an Axeda® Connector agent, an Axeda® IDM Agent, wireless assets, and any other asset communicating directly with the Platform or otherwise managed by the Platform).

o        select a Communicatjions or model profile for each model

o        configure data items for models

o        configure properties for models

o        for Gateway-type models only: configure parameters for assets of this model (such as IP address or COM port of a Gateway asset)

o        configure assets for models

o        create expression rules that can be applied to specific models, asset groups, and assets

o        create some actions that can be applied to specific models, asset groups, and assets

Then, outside the Configuration application, you can make the following model-based assignments:

o        create data item groups for data items in a specific model

o        create Software Management packages for specific models

Manual or Automatic Model Configuration

You can manually create a model for assets that will be communicating with the Platform. Otherwise, when any asset with a new model number registers with the Platform, the model and the asset are created automatically. Axeda Connector, or Axeda Gateway, or an Axeda IDM Agent running on an asset will register with the Platform and identify its model and serial number information. A tracking asset (that is not running an agent) also includes its model and serial number information when contacting the Platform for the first time.

For automatic creation of models and assets, the Platform must be configured to permit "unknown" assets to register. If the Platform is not configured for auto-creation of assets and models, new assets (not already configured in the Platform) are ignored. The current settings for this feature are shown in the Axeda® Administration application, System Configuration page, Allow automatic creation of assets and Allow automatic creation of models.

Notes: For "contactable" assets, you must create the Model manually (these devices do not poll - the Platform must initiate the contact). You must also add the assets manually. To do so in a batch, consider using the Axeda Platform SDK.

Only Administrators can create models using the Model wizard. See an explanation of the types of users for more information.
