Geofence definition

A geofence is a virtual fence that defines a geographical area. You can use a geofence as a means to generate a message when an asset enters or exits the area. In Axeda® Platform, you can set up a geofence using the geofence function when creating rules. If an asset moves inside or outside the designated area, a message can be generated. For example, the movement might generate e-mail messages to be sent to specified users about the movement.

In various applications, the shape of a geofence can be

o        Round (defined using point and radius)

o        Rectangular

o        Polygon

o        Route

For information about drawing geofences as part of an expression rule, refer to the topic, Create or Edit Expression Rule for how to create an expression rule and to the geofence function topics, DistanceToGeofence, DistanceToNamed Geofence, InGeofence, and InNamedGeofence.

If a tracking asset can run geofence rules, the Expression rules page allows the creation of geofences that can be downloaded to the tracking asset. Depending on the capabilities of the tracking asset, the geofences that can be downloaded and run may be limited to a single shape (typically, a center and radius).

In a Platform with Delegated Administration enabled, the names of geofence objects may have prefixes; for details, refer to Names of Objects in DA Units.
