Package Instructions: Restart Agent

Available for: Axeda Gateway and Axeda Connector Agents and for Agents created with Axeda Agent Embedded

After you select the instruction, Wait for Conditions, the Package Instructions page displays a link to a new page, After you select the instruction, Restart Agent, the Package Instructions page displays the options for the type of restart - hard (asset) or soft (agent only).

Remember that this instruction must be the LAST one in a set of instructions. When an agent shuts down, there is no guarantee that any of the instructions have run. Upon unexpected shutdown, the agents can save the queue of packages that have not run yet (depending upon the Agent's configuration), but they cannot guarantee that an in-process package executed properly.

Notes:
For Axeda Gateway, Connector, and Agent Embedded Agents, if the package has a Restart instruction, and the Agent re-registers without going missing (in other words, restarts quickly), then pending package deployments are not retried.

If a restart is initiated when retries are exhausted, the asset deployment is marked by the Platform as Failed with the Platform error code "Retry Limit Exhausted".

AWP Agents and Axeda IDM Agents support two types of package instructions: downloading files to the agent and uploading files from the agent. Axeda Agent Embedded supports file uploads and file downloads; they also support the Restart instruction. These Agents ignore any other instructions defined in a package.

That said, if the package is an IDM SoftwareDirector package, then the Execute instruction is required to perform the software update for the IDM Agent. For details about creating an IDM SoftwareDirector package to update the software for your IDM Agents, refer to Guidelines for Creating IDM SoftwareDirector Packages.
