Custom Object Parameters

The Custom Object Parameters window displays two fields for defining a parameter, Variable Name and Display Name. The Platform uses the Variable Name internally when running the custom object code. It uses the Display Name in the wizards for creating custom rules and custom actions.

From this page, you can add, edit, and delete parameters for the custom object. Click the title of a procedure to display it; click the title again to hide the procedure:

To add a parameter

The Platform does not prevent you from adding parameters to a custom object that is currently used in a rule or action. The Platform will automatically add the parameters and empty (NULL) values for the new parameters to the existing action or rule that uses the custom object.

The two name fields accept up to 500 characters, including spaces and special characters such as , ; ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) \ / and so forth. Note the difference in how they check for duplicates, as explained in the following steps:

1. In the Variable Name field, type the unique identifier for the variable that is used in your source code. The variable name should be unique for the custom object. The Platform checks for duplicates using a case-sensitive approach. For example, the Variable Names state, State, and STATE are unique names for variables for the custom object.

2. In the Display Name field, type a unique identifier for the Platform to use for display in the wizards for custom rules and custom actions. The Platform checks for duplicates using a case-insensitive approach. For example, the Display Names state, State, and STATE are considered duplicate names.

3. Click Add. The names for the parameter appear in the table below these fields.

4. Click Save Changes to commit the changes and return to the Create or Edit Custom Object page. To discard your changes, click Cancel.

To remove a parameter

The Platform does not prevent you from deleting parameters from a custom object that is currently used in a rule or action. The Platform will automatically remove the parameters and any associated values from the action or rule.

1. In the table of parameters, select the right-most check box(es) for the parameter(s) you want to remove.

2. Click Remove Checked Parameters. A message appears prompting you to confirm that you want to permanently remove these parameters.

3. Click OK to confirm the deletion.

4. Click Save Changes to permanently remove the parameters from the table and the Platform. To cancel the deletion, click Cancel.

To edit a parameter

You cannot directly select a parameter and edit it. You must first remove it and then recreate it.

1. In the table of parameters, select the right-most check box(es) for the parameter(s) you want to edit.

2. Click Remove Checked Parameters. A message appears prompting you to confirm that you want to permanently remove these parameters.

3. Click OK to confirm the deletion.

4. In the Variable Name field, type the unique identifier you want the Platform to use.

5. In the Display Name field, type the unique identifier for display in the custom rules and custom actions wizards.

6. Click Add. The names for the parameter appear in the table below these fields.

7. Click Save Changes to commit the changes and return to the Create or Edit Custom Object page. To return to the parameter settings as they were when you opened this window, click Cancel.
